Gus Martinez
Gus Martinez, a native of East Harlem, NYC, found himself facing the challenges of poverty in his early life. Raised by a single mother, Gus worked tirelessly to uplift his family from their financial struggles. Beginning his career in Information Technology in 1983, he encountered setbacks when he was laid off after the events of 9/11. seizing the opportunity, Gus opened a computer repair shop in his neighborhood, becoming a haven for local teenagers. After two years of community service, Gus made a pivotal decision to relocate his family to Orlando in 2004. Despite the move, he continued his work in Information Technology.
Upon his arrival in Orlando, Gus promptly immersed himself in volunteer work at a prominent Spanish-speaking church. He completed membership classes, underwent extensive training, and eventually became an ordained Chaplain under Assemblies of God in 2012. His diverse experiences and unwavering dedication underscored his mission to create a more compassionate and resilient Orange County for everyone.
Empowering Communities: A Journey of Service and Leadership
Over the years, Gus became deeply involved in various community initiatives. He dedicated his time to the Orange County Commission on Aging, eventually assuming the role of chairperson. He also joined the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metro Orlando – Hunter’s Creek Leads group, eventually rising to the position of president.
Gus’s commitment to community service extended beyond formal organizations. In 2010, he founded the nonprofit organization “Miles of Help Through Christ,” aiming to aid the homeless population in Orlando. Through this organization, Gus and his team provided meals, clothing, and various services to those in need. They organized annual events such as Thanksgiving gatherings, hosted at Lake Eola’s Walt Disney Amphitheater, as well as Christmas Miracle and Three Kings Day events for underprivileged children and their families.
